Horseshoe

Revue

1955 - 1986

The Show Overview:

Before the show begins, there are a variety of slide show type advertisements shown on the backdrop. As the lights are dimmed, the orchestra begins playing the opening number which features saloon owner, Slue Foot Sue [originally played by Judy Marsh and later, Betty Taylor] and her four dance hall girls singing a welcome song entitled “Hello Everybody."  Slue Foot Sue next sings a song where she ventures out into the audience to flirt with the male guests and sings a song like, “A Lady Has to Mind Her P’s and Q’s” or “Riverboat Blues”. Other production numbers included “The Girl on the Cover of the Police Gazette.

Next, she introduces the singer and MC of the show, an Irish tenor [originally played by Donald Novis, than Fulton Burley and Jay Meyer]. At the finish of his song, they are joined by the show’s comedian [originally played by Wally Boag and later, Dick Hardwick], who enters the saloon through the back doors in his Traveling Salesman persona firing off six shooters.

As he makes his way to the stage through the audience, he tells jokes and sings “What Have We Here”. He is encouraged to the stage by the MC, where he begins his comedy routine. [In the case of Wally Boag, it was balloon animals].

The Traveling Salesman leaves the stage at this point and Sue and the MC sing a song together. Suddenly, Pecos Bill [a.k.a. the Traveling Salesman] enters the stage with six shooters blazing and dialog that leads to the singing of his signature song, “Pecos Bill”. [This song was also made famous by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers.] It is during this song that the famous  "teeth spitting” scene takes place.

The program of songs

After a rousing version of the song, “Pecos Bill” sang by Sue, the tenor and Pecos himself, and lots of horseplay, they are joined by the dancing girls who perform a rousing can-can number. After the dance, the entire cast assembles for a final brief song and bow.

Facts about the Golden Horseshoe Revue

The Golden Horseshoe Revue show ran from July 16, 1955 until October 12, 1986. Originally written by Wally Boag and Donald Novis, Walt’s idea was to show a representation of an old saloon/dance hall show with comedy, dancing girls, plenty of singing and a beautiful leading lady.

The original cast included Wally Boag as the Traveling Salesman/Pecos Bill character, Donald Novis as the straight man and Irish tenor, and Judy Marsh as Slue Foot Sue, owner of the saloon. Jack Watson served as the pre-show warm-up, who hosted a sing along of 1860's songs.

Eventually Jack was replaced by a slide presentation of sing along songs. Other comedians who played the role included Bert Henry [who was Wally’s sub when the show opened], Jim Adams [who subbed for 12 years], Dick Hardwick [who replaced Wally in the mid 80's], and subs, Dana Daniels,  and Kirk Wall.

Musicians and male cast members at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon wore tight vests over stripped shirts that have gartered sleeves. The waitresses usually wore saloon girl petty coats and skirts with a form fitting bodices and lace trim.

In Disneyland’s souvenir schedule from the 1960’s, the listing for the Golden Horseshoe Saloon read....

"No alcohol is served in this saloon, which is underwritten by Pepsi-Cola

and features such entertainment as Dolores, a singing waitress of Latin appearance, who renders such songs as "Alice Blue Gown". An Irish tenor sings Irish tunes. Slue Foot Sue, the tough proprietress, sings "Won’t You Come Home, Bill Bailey". Pepsi-Cola is the most powerful beverage allowed at Disneyland”.

The 10,000th Show of the Golden Horseshoe Revue

When the show reached its 10,000th performance, it was featured on NBC’s “Wonderful World of Disney” TV Show on Sunday, September 23, 1962.

Here we see Annette and the Can-Can Girls dancing in that special, while comedian Gene Sheldon plays the banjo while sleeping.

The regular Horseshoe Revue cast of Wally Boag and Betty Taylor  was augmented with performances by former Mouseketeer, Annette Funicello, baggy-pants comedian, Gene Sheldon, and former vaudevillian and actor, Ed Wynn. An expanded saloon brawl during the Pecos Bill number was also added. It was later released theatrically on video.

Pictured to the right is an album cover of Miss Funicello in the 1962 Golden Horseshoe Revue Program singing "Mr. Piano Man" written for her by the Sherman Brothers.

The Golden Horseshoe Revue was featured for its 10,000 show as an episode of "The Wonderful World of Disney" on September 23, 1962. It was directed by Ron Miller. To my knowledge, Disney has not released this on video yet.

Is the Golden Horseshoe Revue available on video or DVD?

Because I get asked this question all the time, I have provided the following information for visitors to this site. The actual entire Golden Horseshoe Revue has never been released on video to date by the Disney Company. The following options are available though.

The Golden Horseshoe Revue was featured for its 10,000th show in an episode of "The Wonderful World of Disney" on September 23, 1962. It was directed by Ron Miller. This video was released on the Walt Disney Treasures Series entitled DISNEYLAND - SECRETS, STORIES & MAGIC. This is currently available through most video store and Disney outlets.

There is a soundtrack album released in 1959 that gives you a complete musical representation of the entire show. It is called The Golden Horseshoe Revue and is still sometimes available on www.ebay.com. It tends to be rather pricey though. Usually between $75. and $125.

A few years ago, Disney released a CD version of this original album that could be purchased at the park. This is no longer sold at Disneyland.  It ran for about $25.00 a CD. Check www.ebay.com for used copies

Wally Boag can be seen on the Walt Disney Treasury DVD entitled "The Mickey Mouse Club". These DVD's feature the first week of shows from October 3, 1955 through October 7, 1955. Wally is seen on this DVD with his "Boag-aloons" balloon creations and also, playing the bagpipes.

Wally Boag is featured on the VHS released episodes from a few years ago on Mickey Mouse Club Vol. #6 making balloon animals for Annette Funicello. Later, in the episode he and Annette dance together. This can usually be found on  www.ebay.com or at sometimes at www.amazon.com.

Wally Boag, along with co-stars, Donald Novis and Judy Marsh were taped for an episode of the original Mickey Mouse Club back in the mid 50's. It opens with Don and Judy singing a couple of numbers and features Wally dancing in a nightclub setting. This episode can be found on Mickey Mouse Club Vol. #7 of the re-released Mickey Mouse Club VHS tapes and can usually be found on  www.ebay.com or at sometimes at www.amazon.com.

Wally was also featured on an episode of The Muppet Show that originally showed on May 9, 1981. He recreated a few of his famous Golden Horseshoe routines on this show as well. Wally is featured on Tape number 4 and sometimes you can find this on www.ebay.com as well.

*Note: Wally was also featured on an episode of the Mickey Mouse Club doing his Pecos Bill with Darlene Gillespie and on another episode Wally is featured descending in a hot air balloon. Neither of these episodes has been released on DVD to date.

The costumes used in the Golden Horseshoe Revue were originally designed by Jack Muhs. These include Betty Taylor's elaborate gowns and the dancing girls costumes. Jack Muhs also worked on televisions, The Wild Wild West in 1965 and was a costume consultant for The Bandits in 1967.

Julie Andrews with Wally Boag in 1963

On Saturday, November 2, 1963, Wally Boag appeared with actress, Julie Andrews and The Dapper Dans, [Gene Morford, Jim Schamp, Ron Browne, and Perry Carter] at a special press-only event on the Golden Horseshoe stage to promote the next year's release of Disney’s “Mary Poppins”. They performed "By the Light of the Silvery Moon" together.

Walt Disney had scored a major coup in signing Ms. Andrews, who was fresh from Broadway stage triumphs in "My Fair Lady" and "Camelot".

"Mary Poppins" [1964] was later nominated for 13 Oscars [it won 5] and Ms.  Andrews won Best Actress in her role as the English nanny.

The following pictures were taken in the late 1960's by Christopher De Santis. His father, actor Joe De Santis and Wally were friends. The 1st picture shows Wally doing his Pecos Bill routine with Fulton Burley and Betty Taylor in the background. The 2nd picture shows Wally doing his famous "Boag-alloons" or balloon animals for a young audience member. The 3rd picture is just Wally onstage. [sporting a very cool handlebar moustache.]

During the 1960’s, one of Walt’s favorite charities was the John Tracy Clinic for the Hearing Impaired. John Tracy Clinic’s roots in Hollywood run deep. Both Spencer and Louise Tracy were highly respected actors, and Walt Disney was a Clinic founder and directly involved for many years.

For more info about this charity that is still in existence today, go to http://www.johntracyclinic.org

Started by fellow polo player and actor, Spencer Tracy in honor of his deaf son, John, Walt would volunteer his entertainment staff from Disneyland to perform at the Annual Fundraising Bazaar. The cast of the Golden Horseshoe Revue did this many times.  In order to be useful himself, Walt would always volunteer to bus tables at the annual event.

In this rare 1961 Disneyland program reminder, we see Pepsi Cola's Golden Horseshoe Revue starring Donald Novis, Betty Taylor, Wally Boag, The Golden Horseshoe Girls, The Golden Horseshoe Trio and the Dapper Dans. There were five shows daily that ran from 2 pm until 8 pm daily.

The program also features the Sheriff and Villain stunt/comedy show outside the Golden Horseshoe a few times daily.

Throughout the 1960's, The Dapper Dans [Fred Frank, John Borneman, Roger Axworthy, T.J. Marker] performed as singing waiters warming up the audience before the Golden Horseshoe Revue. To see pictures from that time period, go to this link at the Dapper Dans of Disneyland Tribute Web Site.... The Dapper Dans in the 60's

Note in the picture to the right, the Pepsi-Cola logo on the curtain. Also, notice that guests were allowed to sit in the 2nd floor booths at this time. This picture was taken about 1961.

In 1968, the Golden Horseshoe Revue toured for the USO during the Vietnam War. Originally scheduled for Vietnam, they were later sent to Iceland and Greenland.

In 1969, President Richard M. Nixon asked the cast of the Golden Horseshoe Revue to perform at a White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington DC.

Pepsi-Cola was the sponsor of the Golden Horseshoe Revue at Disneyland for over two decades from July 17, 1955 until September 30, 1982. That sponsor relationship was slightly damaged in 1971 when rival Coca-Cola signed a major contract for co-sponsorship of the American Adventure at Epcot.  Eastman Kodak took up the sponsorship from October 1, 1982 until April 30, 1984.

During the 1970's, an evening variety show was featured in the Golden Horseshoe starring Sonny Helmer. Sonny's claim to fame was putting on a dress and playing the slide trombone in a virtuoso style with his feet while walking around the audience on his hands.

In 1969, Jim Adams fulfilled his life-long dream of working at the Golden Horseshoe. Jim remembers first seeing the show at the age of five.

"I decided then and there, that was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I wanted to be Wally Boag."

In July of 1971, Jim's dream came true when he  replaced Bert Henry who left to go perform in the Diamond Horseshoe Revue at Walt Disney World in Florida. For the next 11 years, Jim became Wally's regular sub until 1982.

Jim Adams

In September of 1971, Wally Boag was sent to Orlando, Florida to help prepare the Diamond Horseshoe Revue for its Walt Disney World opening. He traveled with co-star, Bev Bergeron. Wally was replaced from July through September by Bert Henry as the traveling salesman, while Wally traveled back and forth between Florida and California.

Bert eventually took over the role of the Traveling Salesman in Florida when Wally returned permanently to California in 1973. Dick Hardwick was also trained in Florida by co-star, Bev Bergeron and later returned to Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe.

The Golden Horseshoe in 1977... Just look at that line!

In 1979, the book, “Disneyland, The First Quarter”, reported that

“ ...with five shows daily, its little wonder that the Revue is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records, as the longest running production in show business history with over 42,000 performances before a total of nearly 9 million people.”

The Golden Horseshoe cast pose for a group photo with Mickey, Minnie and the mermaids from the lagoon in Tomorrowland.

In 1979 through 1981, Dick Hardwick understudied Wally Boag while performing in a night time show at the Golden Horseshoe called the Yahoo Revue, as well as playing in the Thunder Mountain Break Down Boys and Main Street Maniacs with Doug Mattocks on banjo, John Jorgenson on mandolin and saxophone, Charlie Warren on upright bass and tuba and Dick on guitar and washboard. These two show was originally tied into the opening of the new Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on September 2, 1979.

Than in 1982, Wally Boag retired and Disney Entertainment booker, Sonny Anderson asked Dick Hardwick to replace him full time. Dick remembers... "Wally gave me his coat from the show and taught me how to throw the Colt 45 over my shoulder. He personally choreographed me as Pecos Bill."

Dick's first actual full time spot as the Revue comedian was at Walt Disney World in Orlando at the Diamond Horseshoe Revue to promote the opening of Big Thunder Railroad there. Dick was originally playing with the Yahoo Revue Show in Florida. Unfortunately, comedy lead, Burt Henry suffered a heart attack and Dick stayed on to replace him for a few months.

Dana Daniels played the Pecos Bill/Traveling Salesman part in the long running Golden Horseshoe Revue from 1983 to 1986, as a sub for Dick Hardwick, with Jay Meyer.

Dana claims that " ...the hardest part of the job was holding all those beans in my mouth and talking and singing at the same time.”

During this time, Kodak was the corporate sponsor of The Golden Horseshoe Revue Show.

To see more pictures of Dana from The Golden Horseshoe Revue days, go to his official web site at www.danadaniels.com . There is a wonderful picture there of Dana with the original cast of Wally Boag, Betty Taylor and Fulton Burley.  Additional pictures of Dana can be seen starring in the Golden Horseshoe Variety Show here.

Billy Hill star, Kirk Wall, substituted for lead, Dick Hardwick in the Pecos Bill role from 1983 - 1986, as well as street performing in a number of bluegrass and country groups around the park, and doing seasonal seasons, such as Pigmania in 1988 [where he played with Dick Hardwick] and Blast to the Past in 1989.

Kirk Wall now stars 5 days a week at the Golden Horseshoe Saloon in the Billy Hill and the Hillbillies Show.

In 1985 and 1986, Don Payne was selected to work as a sub for Dick Hardwick in the Golden Horseshoe Revue playing Pecos Bill/Traveling Salesman.

Also, on July 17, 1985, the country/rock group, Alabama appeared on the Golden Horseshoe Stage in honor of the 30th Anniversary of Disneyland. The show was filmed for a TV special starring John Forsythe and a very young Drew Barrymore.

This next group of pictures is a favorite of mine. It shows five different Pecos Bills.

  • The first is the original, Wally Boag, who did the show from 1955 to 1986.

  • The second is entertainer, Jim Adams, who subbed for Wally's sub, Bert Henry until Bert left to work at the Diamond Horseshoe in Orlando. He than became Wally's sub and did the show from 1970 to 1982.

  • The third is comedian Dick Hardwick, who officially replaced Wally Boag from 1982 until 1986 when the show closed.

  • The forth is magician, Dana Daniels who worked in the show in the early 1980's as Wally's sub. He later went on to do the Golden Horseshoe Variety Show.

  •  The fifth is singer and comedian, Kirk Wall, who subbed for Wally and Dick in the mid 1980's. Kirk went on to star as Billy Hill in the currently running, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies Show.

The Finale of the Golden Horseshoe Revue

With just 4 weeks notice, the Golden Horseshoe Revue in Frontierland officially closed on Sunday, October 12, 1986 with Dick Hardwick, Betty Taylor and Jay Meyer doing the final show. One of the dancers included Dick's wife, Claudia who had been with the show since 1971. The Golden Horseshoe Revue lasted over 50,000 plus shows, helping it to maintain the “Guinness Book of World Records” for the longest running stage show in history.
